GROWTH AND SPREAD OF ASC IN INDIA

GROWTH AND SPREAD OF ASC IN INDIA

It was the childhood dream of Sr. Bruna Ziotti to begin a mission in India. This dream was realized when the General Chapter in Rome 1968 encouraged all the provinces to open mission in other countries. Each religious province was free to choose the country as per their interest and needs of the people. And they opted mostly for the developing countries. Sr. Bruna Ziotti the then General Treasurer was moved, and welcomed the new initiative of the congregation. At this juncture she also felt that it was an appropriate time for her long cherished dream to go to India and be a missionary. And the Adorers had not yet started their mission in India.

In 1068 Sr.  Bruna Ziotti was appointed as the Provincial superior of Florence Province. With the help of two Jesuit priests Ponz and an Indian priest (name not known) met with His Eminence Joseph Parekattil the then Cardinal of Ernakulam Archdiocese of Kerala. His Eminence promised that he would send five young women from India, whom Sr. Bruna Ziotti would bring back after their Religious formation and professional preparation in Italy. The entire province was happy to have five Indian women join them with great hope to carry the charism of the Adorers, back to their native land.

The first group of Indian Adorers reached Bangalore in Karnataka on January 12th, 1978, accompanied by the Provincial Superior, Sr. Aldina Barbarossa. The first house in Bangalore at Arekere established on 11 January, 1982 and visited the villages, establishing school, dispensary and social work. The second house in Chikmangaluru at Tarikere(Karnataka) in 1984 and were engaged in pastoral work and family apostolate and later on, the school was established. In 1986 the Adorers moved to Kerala at Champannoor in Ernakulam Diocese, followed by we extended to Mysore Diocese in 1989. By now there were three formation houses Bangalore, Champannoor and in Mysore. In 1997, the Indian mission branched out to Andhra Pradesh in Kurnool Diocese (Grihini Programe). In 2002 we moved to Kannur Diocese with the purpose of education. We are happy that we could establish an Indian community in Rome at Palidoro in 2003 where the adorers are involved in the healing ministry. Gradually the Indian mission is expanded to various states like; Jharkhand-2004, Maharashtra – 2004, Tamil Nadu – 2006, Madhya Pradesh – 2007, Delhi – 2008, Kolar – 2008, Koramangala – 2013 and Telangana and Uttar Pradesh – 2017.
